Named for the Declaration of Independence, the city was founded on March 29, 1827. It is known as the Queen City of the Trails as the frontier point for settlers going west on the Santa Fe, California and Oregon Trails. Each year, the pioneering spirit is celebrated with the Santi-Cali-Gon Days Festival over Labor Day weekend.

Independence’s rich history is seen in its museums and libraries, too. The city boasts 11 museums ranging from the 1859 Jail, the Truman National Historic Site and the Bingham-Waggoner Estate; and seven libraries, including the Midwest Genealogy Center. It is also home to the Jackson County Genealogical Society.

Bordered by U.S. 24 and U.S. 40 highways to the north and south, and I-70 running east-west through the southern part of Independence, The City of Trails is home to Bass Pro, the Independence Events Center and the historic Independence Square downtown area. The Missouri Comets and Missouri Mavericks both call the IEC home.

Independence Missouri Public Schools serves 15,500 students in 29 different buildings from early childhood learning through high school.

The city’s massive parks and recreation department supports more than 38 local parks, community centers, youth and adult recreation programs, the Truman Memorial Building and George Owens Nature Park.
